Preserving and Enhancing the Enjoyment of Wave Riding

Ice-Nine's focus is on the tool and, better still, its core - the foam. To move it forward, we've looked hard over our shoulder. We've taken best of what our history has shown us - there is no ride like a polyurethane ride - and stoked it with a breath of fresh air to create CANE, ABLE and MOWSES.

PURE GLASS DISTRIBUTES PURE WHITE ICE-9 BLANKS

Top notch Orange County production shop calls for top-notch foam

ORANGE COUNTY, CA-Costa Mesa's one-stop shop for board-builders just got stoked and stocked with blanks from innovative foam company, Ice-Nine Foam Works. For shapers and customers looking for help with complete board fabrication, Pure Glass provides Ice-Nine's TDI "Mowses" blanks in addition to a full range of production services for those who would like to produce high-quality boards under their own brand.

The decision to stock Ice-Nine blanks made perfect sense to Pure Glass owner, Jim Chalupnik. "Many of the local shapers have been putting Ice-Nine boards through our shop, and the guys around here are stoked on the foam," says Chalupnik, who also commented on how light-weight the finished boards are turning out. "It's easy to shape and finishes out great. Some of our biggest customers are pretty dedicated to it already," he adds.

Though Pure Glass is a wholesale shop for many shapers who can use the facility for all of their shaping, glassing and color needs, the shop also boasts a number of in-house shapers such as Dano, Cordell, Wave Tools, JC Hawaii, G-force, McKinnon and Rich Wisz. "I really like the way it shapes out," says Rocky McKinnon, of McKinnon Shapes and Designs. "It's easy to work with and fine sands with ease, which is really important for both hand and machine shapers," he adds.

Pure Glass is now carrying Ice-Nine's Mowses formula in a full range of shapes with their standard basswood stringers. Redwood, cedar, plywood, balsa, custom rockers, T-bands, high density foam T-bands, multiple stringers, colored glue, etc. is available upon request with quick turnaround. The catalog includes a comprehensive line of innovative shapes, from high-performance shortboards to longboards and guns, and just recently, the addition of the Walker longboard molds. Mowses is the new TDI formula that was created while collaborating with foam icon, Harold Walker. The resulting foam is not only ultralight and white but is also extremely easy to plane and sand. Its tight cells translate to greater liveliness, superior dent resistance and longer life in the water than other TDI foams.

The main focus at Pure Glass is to provide its customers with all the means to manufacture surfboards. "We provide our customers with everything they need to get in the water," says Chalupnik. Services include everything from production shaping to polyester and epoxy glassing to color glasswork. With the focus on volume production capabilities, Pure Glass says they will turnaround glasswork within two weeks, regardless of the volume of the shaper. They also carry a full range of surfboard hard goods such as resin, fiberglass cloth, traction pads, leashes, fins and board bags.

Pure Glass is conveniently located in the heart of Orange County at 1777 Placentia in Costa Mesa.

REIGNING CHAMP, RICKY CARROLL, TAKES FIRST PLACE AGAIN

Florida shaper shows the west coast how it's done
at Sacred Craft shape-off two years in a row

Del Mar, CA- A huge congratulations to undefeated shape-off champion, Ricky Carroll from Florida, for his unrivaled success at the 2nd Annual Tribute to the Masters Shape-off, presented by Ice-Nine Foam Works.
With only 90 minutes in the Akeena Solar portable shaping booth at the Sacred Craft Consumer Surfboard Expo, each renowned competitor raced against the clock to successfully replicate the Bill Caster four-channel, wing-pin tail, single-fin Chris O'Rourke model board. It was no simple feat, and the judges had their work cut out for them as they deliberated each anonymous shape.

"And the grand prize winner, for the second year in a row-Ricky Carroll from Florida!" announced Sam George, amidst an animated crowd of anxious show attendees, which included members of the Caster family, whom were honored to be a part of an event that benefited the iconic Caster name and logo.

The east coast shaper literally jumped off the ground in disbelief and exhilaration as he humbly accepted a hug from legendary shaper Terry Martin, along with the one-thousand dollar check and the Midget Smith trophy. Midget's family was also present to receive high honors for preserving legacy of his name.

"This competition represents the celebration of life of two icons of surf, and by having Terry Martin present the Midget Smith trophy, all the parts came together," said Ice-Nine president Jon Stillman. "We're stoked about the whole thing. Seeing the Caster family there as well as Midget Smith's family added a whole lot of heart and soul to the event," he added.

"The competition was just as hard as last year's, and the shape was just as difficult to copy," said Ricky, referring to the 2007 shape-off, honoring Mike Diffenderfer. "Everyone did a great job. We were all really close so it made it hard for the judges to decide," he added. Renowned board builders from up and down the California coastline (Chris Christenson, Ned Mahon, Ward Coffey, Timmy Patterson and Matt Calvani) all posed some stiff competition. Ricky had his doubts after finishing and wasn't sure that he had accurately captured some of the nuances of the shape. "Honestly, I thought I left the door open for someone else to win," he said.

But the panel of experts (Hank Warner, Bird Huffman, Ernie Higgins, Chris Aherns and Tim Bessell) seemed to think otherwise. After closely examining the replicas and placing the template over each one, they decided that RC had most precisely captured the template and channels in the Caster board.

Ricky Carroll's notable triumph is already being celebrated from his crew at R&D Surf and other supporters in Florida, who were cheering for him from afar. "I really felt the pressure from the guys on the east coast who wanted me to bring home the grand prize again," said this year's reigning champion.

The shape-off boards will all be auctioned off, and proceeds will go to the Caster family to help protect the iconic Caster label.

The Shape of Shaping to Come

We want to make sure that the craft of custom shaping gets passed to the next generation of design innovators. Problem is that shapers and their understudies were usually discouraged about having to pay full price for as practice board. To encourage our master shapers to give their time and expertise in the shaping bay to aspiring young artisans, we've eliminated this barrier with the ICE-NINE APPRENTICE PROGRAM. Ice-Nine donates rejected and experimental blanks to registered master-apprentice teams. More details about Ice-Nine Apprentice Partnership Program are available here.
